Haunted Mansion
The Haunted Mansion is a 2003 fantasy comedy film based on the famous Disney theme park attraction of the same name. Directed by Rob Minkoff and starring Eddie Murphy, the movie takes a lighthearted approach to the spooky and mysterious atmosphere of the Haunted Mansion.
The story revolves around Jim Evers (played by Eddie Murphy), a workaholic real estate agent, who is determined to put his family first for a change. When Jim and his wife, Sara (played by Marsha Thomason), receive a strange invitation to visit a mansion, they decide to take their kids, Michael and Megan, along for what they believe will be a relaxing family vacation.
Upon arriving at the mansion, they encounter the mysterious owner, Edward Gracey (played by Nathaniel Parker), and his staff, who seem to be trapped in a perpetual state of haunting. As the night unfolds, Jim and his family discover the dark secrets of the mansion’s past, including the ghostly figure of a woman named Elizabeth (played by Aree Davis) and the tragic love story that binds her to Gracey.
With the help of a psychic medium named Madame Leota (played by Jennifer Tilly) and the loyal butler Ramsley (played by Terence Stamp), the Evers family must unravel the mysteries of the Haunted Mansion, find a way to break the curse that plagues the mansion’s inhabitants, and save their own lives in the process.
The film combines elements of comedy, adventure, and supernatural fantasy as the Evers family navigates through spooky encounters, humorous situations, and heartwarming moments. It captures the essence of the Haunted Mansion ride by incorporating iconic elements such as the stretching room, the ghostly ballroom, and the singing busts while expanding on the lore and mythology of the attraction.
While the movie received mixed reviews upon its release, it remains a fun and family-friendly interpretation of the Haunted Mansion theme, offering an entertaining blend of comedy and spooky thrills.
